Bird life in Lower Merion

Golden crowned kinglets are tiny little birds with big personalities. Find them foraging for insects in trees and shrubs.

Michael’s recommendations for seeing birds locally are:

  • Saunders Woods (closed Wednesdays) - Golden crowned kinglets and hummingbirds

  • Idlewild Farm Preserve (Indigo buntings, Blue grosbeaks, and butterflies)

  • Shortridge Memorial Park (eBird hot spot, warblers, E. screech owls)

  • Valley Forge Trail, Chesterbrook location parking lot or walk to Swedesford Rd. - rookery for great blue heron

  • Retention pond in front of Harriton High School - wood duck breeding area

  • Forbidden Trail at Valley Green Inn

  • River Road, Gladwyne (walk towards Belmont to Flat Rock dam) - belted kingfishers, cormorants, great blue heron, visit in autumn

  • Chanticleer

  • Narberth Train Station - hummingbirds!

  • West Branch of Indian Creek at Remington Road basin - cedar waxwings

  • The Willows, Radnor - Ducks, bluebirds, herons, kingfishers

Spots within a 30 minute drive…

  • John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge

  • Across the Tacony Bridge to Palmyra Cove, left at Dunkin Donuts, and another left under the bridge (spring migration for warblers)

Spots within a 1.5 hour drive…

  • Conowingo Dam - bald eagles

  • Bombay Hook - snow geese

  • Edwin Forsythe, NJ (8 mile driving path)

  • Ocean City, NJ Welcome Center - visit in late spring/end of May when babies being born

  • Long Beach Island, Barnegat Lighthouse
